Internet-0 is a low speed, low overhead idea for networking where speed and bandwidth are not the big issues.  Light switches and thermostats don't need gigabit ethernet nor do they need microsecond timing. The fundamental idea is that if the bit width is bigger than the physical wiring infrastructure, you don't need fancy hardware (switches and routers and such) so for slow comms, you can use very simple infrastructure.
