A few useful (?) links
- New York City and its thrilling
cultural life
- Jazz and improvised music :
- Fat Cat and Small's, the two sister clubs offering the best and cheapest jazz in town
- Detour, which
has good (sometimes excellent) jazz, always good beer, and no cover
ever
- Cornelia Street Café,
a West Village jewel
- Tonic, the Mecca of downtown
music (meaning improvised, energetic, and noisy at times). Give a penny if you can, they almost suffocated last year.
- The
Knitting Factory, which sometimes rivals Tonic, and more often just
makes noise
- The Jazz Galllery, a rising
star in modern jazz
- The Mythical Village Vanguard,
which sometimes avoids the pitfalls of mercantilism
- The 55 bar, if you're really too
lazy to go elsewhere than Sheridan Square for jazz
- The Jazz Standard,
the nouveau riche of NY's jazz clubs. Don't expect any cutting-edge,
risky music here, but it is nice to recall that some clubs actually
care more about delivering music than food and drinks.
- Barbès, if you
are lucky enough to live in Park Slope or patient enough to spend 4
hours on the subway
- Zinc Bar : so close to where I lived that I have never been there.
- CBGB Lounge sometimes
has very good free jazz . Usually on Sundays.
- The Harlem clubs : Lenox Lounge,
St Nick's
pub, Showman's
- The JVC
Jazz Festival, if you happen to be in NYC at that time of the year
- All about jazz, Gotham
jazz, which have excellent reviews and listings
- Electronic
- Nublu , the
next step in blending electronic and organic grooves. Weekly events
with jazz, forro, hip hop, dub, funk, or just great house music.
- Cielo, with resident DJ Francois K on mondays. Best sound system in the city.
- Orchestral music and Opera
- Some musicians active in NY:
- Ben Monder, exceptional
guitar player
- Steve Lehman,exciting sax
player, the website of which has cool excerpts
- Jay Collins, named
after the same bird as I am, but a really good cat
- Jason Lindner, whose
Big Band makes monday nights jump up and down
- Chris
Cheek, who is just brilliant
- Spencer Katzman, for whom I have to decide whether I prefer the music, the wit, or both
