Southern Ocean sea-ice extent is a sensitive indicator of the global climate system. In order to accurately interpret changing conditions today, it is important to understand how changes in sea-ice extent influenced (and were influenced by) climate changes during other periods of Earth history. One approach used to reconstruct these changes is to collect information about warm and cold water diatom assemblages in the Southern Ocean, and to use this information to track changes in time through deep sea cores.
