Core Barrel Temperature Tool

|

|
Overview
The core barrel temperature tool (CBTT) was developed for assessing borehole fluid temperature conditions while drilling. This is an important measurement to ensure successful subsequent logging operations in hydrothermal environments. The CB-TT is similar to the corebarrel drill string accelerometer (CB-DSA), in that it makes another step in direction of making digital measurements while coring. The prime function of the CBTT is to measure and record the borehole temperatures and pump rates while drilling in order to determine the feasibility of performing logging operations in the high temperature conditions associated with superheated water adjacent to hydrothermal vents. To date the CB-TT has been successfully on ODP Leg 193.
The CBTT was designed, manufactured, assembled and tested at the LDEO-BRG facility. Here, the thermocouple is subjected to boiling water. Additionally, the whole assembly was placed in an oven and heated to 200°C.

Deployment
The CB-TT is housed within our modular digital corebarrel deployment system. It can be swapped with the drill string acceleration electronic package then deployed with an ODP-style corebarrel. Less than 3 minutes of rig time is consumed rigging up and rigging down this tool. |
