In mid-Novermber 2000, the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) will begin drilling in the Manus Basin hydrothermal site. The primary scientific objective of this cruise (also known as Leg 193) is to study the differences between convergent margin and mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal sites. Previous drilling by ODP at hydrothermal vents has been limited to mid-ocean ridge sites.
