What are your responsibilities in the Borehole Research Group?
Lately I’ve been doing a lot of IODP education and outreach work -- creating and providing media for scientists, teachers, students, and the public at large. It is crucially important that the general public be conversant with the scientific process and to appreciate the benefits of thinking critically -- both for the competitiveness of our country and also, quite simply, for living a more rewarding and meaningful life.
I also do a lot of internal technical writing and editing to support the Borehole scientists and engineers.
What’s the most fun about your job?
Getting the chance to play around with interesting new software and be creative.
What’s your favorite book?I read mostly non-fiction, but my favorite books tend to be novels: E.L Doctorow’s “The Book of Daniel,” Vonnegut’s “The Sirens of Titan” and almost anything by Philip Roth.
What’s your favorite music?
I have pretty eclectic musical tastes, but lately have been listening to a lot of dub and electronic music. I also have a recording studio at home and write music in my spare time.
If you could go back in time, where and when would you go? Why?
Paris at the turn of the 20th century was probably pretty exciting from a cultural standpoint, but I’d rather go into the future than the past if given the choice.
What were your favorite and least favorite subjects in school?
Favorites: Music, Biology and English
Least Favorite: Chemistry and Earth Science
