We unload our own gear from the plane right on the runway at the airport in Reykjavik. Although the ship has a schedule to meet, weather or problems with mechanics can cause delays. There was a delay this time but it gives us a chance to see Iceland and the midnight sun. |

| When the R.V. EWING is ready for departure, we are all excited that we are finally going to sea. |
Our first coring site is two hours out of port so we begin preparations as soon as we board. First thing is to mount the core rig into the "cradle", or bucket. Once mounted, the cradle can pivot the core rig to an upright position for launching.
The core rig is ready as we sail toward the first site. The ocean splashes over the deck -- the North Atlantic can be rough water! When we reach the first coring site, we must position the cradle upright so the coring rig can be lowered into the water. These images show the process as you continue the cruise. |
