Earthquake Information from Lamont-Doherty Cooperative Seismographic Network (LCSN) Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (02/22/2003 23:30 EDT) On Friday morning, February 21, 2003 at 10h 10m 37s EDT, a 200-foot barge with 100,000 barrels of gasolin exploded while unloading the cargo at Port Mobil on Arthur Kill, the waterway between Staten Island and New Jersey. According to New York Times (02/22/2003), two crewmen were killed and a depot worker on shore was critically burned. The explosion generated seismic signals that are recorded by the seismographic stations in the region. Weak but clear signals are seen at stations about 30 to 60 km from the blast. The origin time given is the time of explosion. http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/LCSN/Eq/20030221/02212003.html Origin time: 02/21/2003 10h 10m 37s (EDT), 15:10:37 (UTC) Location: 40.543 N, 74.248 W Depth= 0 km (40 deg 32.58 minute N, 74 deg 14.88 minute W) Magnitude: Mc=0.3 Won-Young Kim Research Scientist Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University Phone: (845) 365-8909 c/o Stacey Gander ------------------- Notice that there was a similar explosion on January 7, 1983 at 00:14 (EDT) in Newark, NJ. In that incident, gasoline tank exploded and about 3 milion gallons of gasoline burned. The blast generated much stronger seismic signals and were recorded up to about 260 km from the blast. 1983 Jan 07 05:14:25 (00:14 EDT) 40.71N, 74.13W
