Feb 27, 1997, near Quetta, Pakistan Earthquake. The epicenter of the shock is indicated
by the largest "beach-ball" on the map about 80 km east of Quetta. The beach-ball
indicates a thrust fault source mechanism, indicating that the Indian subcontinent is
thrusting under the Eurasian Plate along the Himalayan Mt. front.
34 earthquakes which have occurred in the region during 1977 through 1997
are plotted. These are earthquakes usually greater than mb(P) 5.5 which have been
analyzed by the Centroid Moment Tensor inversion method at Harvard University.
Hence, their source mechanisms and focal depths are fairly well known.
