The first at sea testing of the Seafloor Mapping and Remote Characterization Pods (SCAMP) was complted during the week of May 11, 1998 on the USS Hawkbill (SSN666).

The High Resolution Subbottom Profiler (HRSP) and the Sidescan Swath Bathymetric Sonar (SSBS) were both tested. Selected images from both systems will be avialable here shortly.

HRSP

The following are two examples of data from the High Resolution Subbotom Profiler (HRSP which is a repackaged Bathy-2000P from Ocean Data Equipment Co (ODEC)).

SSBS

The first quick look results are encouraging. For both of the following images, the scale lines are 1km apart with the track along the center of the image. Darker (or redder) indicates increased return energy. Nominal swath width is 20km. These images were grabbed from the realtime display and stored as rasters.

More detailed data analysis is currently under way.

A backscatter ("sidescan") image from the recent trials.
