Polar Weekend Science Activities

Polar Weekend Events brought polar research scientists together with the community to explain their science and demonstrate activities that would bring polar processes to life. Over a 3 year period Polar Weekend events were hosted throughout the Northeast with support from the National Science Foundation. The following activities were developed from these events in cooperation with the scientists who demonstrated them.

Shrinking Arctic Sea Ice Activity & Poster of the Science - Stephanie Pfirman, Barnard & LDEO

How is sea ice in the Arctic changing? What are the impacts on the ecosystem?

Antarctic Gamburtsev Province (AGAP) - Robin Bell, Michael Studinger, Nick Frearson, Adrienne Block, LDEO

A mysterious Mountain Range Hidden miles beneath the ice sheet in East Antarctica!

Norway-U.S. Scientific Traverse of East Antarctica - Tom Neumann (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center) and Zoe Courville (CRREL)

Travelling by land across the East Antarctic plateau! What did they learn from the ice?

Shrinking Ice Sheets and Rising Sea Level - Bob Bindschadler, NASA

What will the effects of melting ice sheets be on our coastlines?

The McMurdo Dry Valleys, A Unique Ecosystem - Andrew Fountain, Portland State University

Are there really places in Antarctica that are not covered in snow? What lives in this unique habitat?

An Unknown Subglacial World - Chris Shuman (University of Maryland's, Goddard Earth Science & Technology Center), Adrienne Block (LDEO)

How can there be lakes underneath the ice sheet?
