Email Attachments Policy

In order to accommodate some of Lamont's email users we have eased our
restriction on email attachments with dot zip or dot rar extensions.
Please note that this does not apply to the admin.ldeo.columbia.edu users.

As of November 16th, 2010, we are allowing users to easily retrieve
quarantined attachments from their email clients (readers). The attachments
have been scanned for viruses, but they may still be dangerous - do not
retrieve the attachment if you are not expecting it or you don't know
the source - you could compromise our whole computer system.

We still recommend using our anonymous ftp server for  exchanging these
type of files.  Here is more info on ftp:

If your colleagues email you attachments with dot zip or dot rar extensions, AND our
virus protection/anti-spam Sophos box does not mark them as a virus, you will
get a message like this:

An attachment named FileName.zip was removed from this document.
IF YOU WERE EXPECTING THIS ATTACHMENT you can retrieve it at the following URL
for two weeks, but PLEASE ONLY DO THIS IF YOU WERE EXPECTING THIS ATTACHMENT since
attachments from unknown sources are almost always security hazards
