increased WAN bandwidth
Over the past several months the work to design, purchase, install, configure and test a new 500Mbit data circuit, new routers and new firewall has progressed. As of yesterday we have transitioned the LDEO wide area network connection over to this new circuit. Both our commodity and Internet2 traffic use the new path and diverge once they get to Morningside. The new circuit is five times faster than our old 100Mbit link.
Most users will not notice any difference as web page loads are mostly a function of the remote server performance. However, users who routinely transfer large data files should notice a marked increase in throughput. As always, single threaded transfers may not be able to make use of the new bandwidth, but multi-threaded transfers certainly will.
