<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Last Sunday afternoon we hosted a very successful reception for our many neighbors and friends. Thank you to all Lamonters who helped with that. Building a strong cadre of ambassadors and supporters in the local community is one important part of our efforts to maintain a strong and stable Lamont.

As the winter weather arrives please do not forget to check the emergency number – (845) 365-8100 on any morning that road conditions appear particularly bad. If a decision has been made, for safety reasons, to close the campus for the day, or delay opening, an announcement will be on that number by 6:30am. Most importantly employees should consider their own safety in light of conditions in their local area during severe weather, and act accordingly.

It is heartening when members of our staff receive recognition for their life-long contributions to our science. It does not happen often enough - too many unsung heroes remain in our hallways. But occasionally a set of recognitions come together that are particularly worthy of note. Recent examples include Paul Richards, who has been awarded the 2006 Leo Szilard Lectureship Award by the American Physical Society "For work applying his expertise in geophysics to seismic detection of nuclear explosions. His developments in 'forensic seismology' are at the heart of the verification required for a test ban." And down in warm and sunny South Africa a few days ago Arnold Gordon was awarded an honorary D. Sc. by the University of Cape Town - we already have glorious photographs of Arnold looking suitably regal in scarlet gown and black velvet cap. And Denis Kent was recognized on December 2nd by the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, France, with its highest Honorary degree, becoming one of its few Doctor Honoris Causa. Congratulations to all, and thank you for continuing to bring recognition and acclaim to Lamont through your achievements.

The Holiday parties will begin in earnest next week - the climax being, of course, our own Lamont-wide party on Wednesday at 5pm at the IBM Palisades Conference Center - I look forward to seeing you all there.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
