<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
This will be very brief this week because I am down in DC for a couple
of days, and am bouncing from one meeting to the next. (It was 80 degrees
down here on Thursday - full blown summer). Primary meeting was with
the folks in the Ocean Sciences Division at NSF talking about the refit
of the EWING – along with John Diebold, Paul Ljunggren and Al Walsh.
We ran a two-hour long briefing session with the leadership of OCE on Thursday
afternoon. We described what we consider to be the reasonable options,
giving estimates of costs. I think it went well - we had many good
questions but we had good answers to them all. We hope to hear in a
few weeks about what guidance they give us with regard to the preparation
of a formal proposal.
EWING remains in the yard in Norfolk - some sea trials on Monday and she
will sail for her first science operations of the year in mid April.
I am extremely pleased to announce that Nili Harnik in the Ocean and Climate
Physics Division has been awarded the Storke Doherty Lectureship.
As I am sure everyone understands, this is an extremely competitive process,
and this year's selection committee, led by Roger Buck, had a particularly
difficult time identifying an awardee from among the many superb applications.
Congratulations Nili!
I am sorry that I will not be at the Colloquium this afternoon to hear
who has won this year's Graduate Student Heezen Award.
I will back in the office all next week - coming home over the weekend.
- Mike
