<> LAMONT WEB UPDATE
The revision of the LDEO web site has begun. The revision is being
implemented by the LDEO web producer Carmen Alex with assistance from Mahdad
Parsi and Ravi Rajakumar and guidance from the LDEO web committee.
Since Carmen's arrival in mid-January, the revision has been focused on the
structure of the existing content in the upper levels of the site.
We hope to preview a beta version of the revised site to the Observatory
this summer with the expectation of going live in October. Feedback
from the Lamont community is essential to the success of the revision.
If you have not yet responded to the questionnaire released last year, please
do so. It is available online at:
http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/ldeo/it/web/websurvey
We need your input. We will solicit additional feedback once the
beta site is available. When the revision is complete, the focus will
shift to addition of new content. At that time, templates will be
provided for groups and individuals who wish to adopt the design of the Observatory
site for their own web pages.
An online request form is also available for groups or individuals who
require assistance revising their web presence or developing new content.
This service will be available once the revision phase is complete.
Please submit requests for web services for your division, group, or project
web sites via the online form:
http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/ldeo/it/web/webrequest.html
The web committee will assist the web production team in prioritizing
requests for time and resources.
In an effort to organize the new Lamont web site, the web production
team and Web Advisory Committee are soliciting information about your existing
sites (Project/Group/Division related, not personal sites)
We have made available online a form for you to register your current
site for inclusion in the new LDEO web site (group, division, research,
or projects and initiatives web sites)
If you don't have a site, you do not need to complete this form. (If
you would like to create one, please refer to the form in the pervious section)
Please fill out the registration form to the best of your knowledge
and leave out the fields that do not apply to you, or if you are unsure
of the answers:
http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/ldeo/it/web/ldeourls.html
Pages registered by May 11th, 2003 will be linked to the new Lamont

<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
I attended the last Council of Deans meeting to be chaired by Provost
Jonathon Cole on Tuesday. That was a poignant moment. Jonathon
has been a good friend these past two years as I have struggled to comprehend
the intestines of Columbia University’s decision-making apparatus.
Just as I was beginning to gain insight, everything changes………..
I sent Joe Worzel a copy of our recently published Biennial report a
few weeks ago. (Joe was at Lamont from the beginning and was Maurice Ewing’s
close confidante) I received from him today a copy of Lamont Geological
Observatory’s annual report for 1949. I include below the total listing
of staff at LDEO for 1949 from this report. I fear that many (especially
those a couple of decades younger than me) will not appreciate the awe I feel
when reading this, but the number of legendary figures that are included in
this list of Research Assistants is amazing. (And remember, this is the total
staff list – and amazingly, there is only ONE geochemist!!)
Staff
Maurice Ewing Director
James Coulter Administrative officer

Lamont received $243K in grants that year – and not one was from the
federal government; and 22 papers were published – Lamont Contribution numbers
1 through 22.
Anyway, enough nostalgia……is it mean for me to feel a sense of satisfaction
when I hear from those returning from the spring AGU meeting in Nice France,
that the weather has been miserable there all week? Probably is.
Arnold Gordon returns in a few days, after a very long but successful
cruise off Antarctica – welcome home to Arnold and to all his colleagues.
I know that Arnold is happy to be back – because now he can start on all
the performance reviews for his Division…..
It's going to be warm on the weekend – enjoy it.
