<> FILE CABINETS
As a result of various renovation/renewal projects underway, there is a
surplus number of metal file cabinets (of which no one ever seems to have
enough). While many of these have been in use for a great number of
years and may not win any architectural contests, they are serviceable.
The file cabinets are being stored in Tom Eberhard's shipping department
and will be made available on a first come first serve basis for transfer
to your office (not hallways, please). Thereafter, they will be available
for personal acquisition as long as you bear the responsibility for their
timely removal. Finally, they will be scrapped. Please give Tom
a call (8865) if you are interested.
<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
This week started last Sunday with a great afternoon of meetings and presentations
- the Board of the LDEO Alumni Association met, and there was a special Public
Lecture given by alumnus Bill Ruddiman. For the third event in a row
the auditorium was packed, and there were more than 20 folks who had to watch
the lecture via a video link. I fear next season it will be necessary to implement
some scheme to limit attendance to these lectures - we have become the victims
of our own success. We hosted Bill and a number of special guests for dinner
- our only disappointment was that, at the last minute, Jeff Fox, our Alumni
Association President had to cancel his plans to join us. The reasons for
this were laudable however, he was finishing off a joint proposal between
Texas A&M and LDEO for the next phase of the Ocean Drilling Program. Dave
Goldberg's portion of this, as submitted, is the largest single proposal (dollar-wise)
that we have ever submitted to NSF - I will not quote the number because
it is a real competition in which we are engaged, and our competitors would
benefit from knowing just how economically we can operate logging operations
for IODP!
Monday and Tuesday were totally devoted to the activities of the Earth Institute
External Advisory Board (for your information the membership is listed below)
- five members of this Board visited the Lamont Campus on Tuesday morning,
ex-NIH head Harold Varmus impressing everyone with his arrival on the Campus
by bicycle from Manhattan!
Decisions concerning our recruiting in Coastal and Estuarine processes were
completed on Wednesday - we will be contacting the chosen candidates in the
next few days and starting the formal appointment processes to the Doherty
staff. This means that our selections in four of our chosen six recruiting
areas are essentially complete - Marine Seismic Reflection and Marine Ecosystem
Modeling remain and await action. We are extremely happy with this progress
- we will be bringing some superb new people onto our staff.
On Monday, we will be hosting (very briefly) Jack Marburger - the Science
Advisor to the President of the United States. On Monday afternoon at
3:00pm, Lerner Hall Room 555 - Dr Marburger will be giving a presentation
on Science Policy and Climate - all are invited.
Have a great weekend,
- Mike
