<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Please do not forget the Lamont Ball on Saturday night - Lamont Hall at 7pm - I look forward to seeing many of you there. On Sunday afternoon there is our penultimate Public Lecture, led by the Tree Ring Lab.

Tuesday, May 20th there will be the announcement of the Third Annual Mentoring award - 3pm in the Monell auditorium.

Earlier this week, we held the inaugural meeting of a committee, chaired by Paul Ljunggren, charged with proposing policies that will enable us to convert the warehouse into a useful facility again. This is a tough mission, but essential if we are to expand our field and observational activities. Target for production of the recommendations is July 1st.

Earlier today ExCom approved the first two appointments to come out of our recruiting campaign - one in Remote Sensing and one in Solid Earth Dynamics - these are both superb appointments. When the offers have been accepted and the formalities are complete, I will include brief descriptions of these individuals in this report.

Many of us continue to work hard on the process of generating the Strategic Plan for LDEO, for the Earth Sciences Cluster of the Earth Institute and for the Earth Institute overall. A presentation by Jeff Sachs and myself, to provide everyone with an update on this important process has been scheduled for May 29th here in the Monell Auditorium - try to keep that morning clear in your schedule.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
