<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I spent Tuesday in a 'retreat' with John Diebold and Paul Ljunggren talking about how to structure the Marine Department in future years, so that we are well prepared to tackle the growing challenges of the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the growing complexity of the technical systems that we are expected to operate, the continuing strong competition from our sister ship-operating institutions, and the likelihood of our acquiring a replacement vessel for EWING. We retreated all the way to the Pearl River Hilton - which combined logistical convenience with sufficient physical separation from our respective offices to insure a day uninterrupted by regular office business. This was the first time I had been to Pearl River since I visited Manik Talwani's Gulf Oil Research group in the Blue Hills Plaza, many many moons ago!

I flew down to DC on Wednesday night and had a long day at NSF on Thursday - meeting with Jim Yoder, Mike Reeve, Herm Zimmerman, Walter Snyder and Tom Baerwald (in SBE). The primary motivation was a major presentation to the OCE Facilities group concerning cost estimates for our plans to replace EWING with another used industry vessel.  Thanks to the meticulous preparations of my good colleagues in the marine department, these presentations went exceptionally well.  NSF even brought back Don Heinrichs out of retirement (Don was head of Facilities in OCE when the Bernier/Ewing deal was negotiated) to listen to our plans. I remain optimistic that we will get the go-ahead from NSF (to submit a formal proposal), but we will have to wait 2-3 weeks to receive official notification.

Keep dry over the weekend - August is slipping by!

– Mike
