<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

As you know, Chris Small and his committee, along with the Observatory's webmaster Carmen Alex, have been working hard for several months on the reinvention of our web site - in fact not only reinvention and redesign, but also the establishment of rigorous procedures that will facilitate its maintenance as a topical and up-to-date source of information and data for ourselves, our colleagues in research, students and the general public. I am very happy to announce that significant progress has been made and the 'revision' phase (Phase I) of the new web site is almost completed. The site revision includes a new look and feel, as well as improved functionality and usability.

The beta version is now available for viewing and testing at http://satchmo.ldeo.columbia.edu. Please take a look and send comments and bug reports to webmaster@ldeo.columbia.edu. Your input is essential. Phase I will end on October 3rd, in time for Open House, when we plan to go live with the new web site. Until then, testing will continue.

Starting October 6th, Phase II will begin with content revisions and additions. New content will be solicited and created. There will be an online form to help facilitate new web site requests.

I cannot stress too much the importance of this activity - please give your unreserved support to all those involved in working on this.

Our research vessel Maurice Ewing arrived in Bergen, Norway a few days ago, and we hope she will sail late next week, under the leadership of our good colleague Steve Holbrook, to study the Storegga slide - the subject of the lead story in the most recent Eos. This was a major submarine landslide that occurred 8000 years ago generating a 10-20m high tsunami that impacted Norway, Scotland and the Shetlands. Steve will be leading a detailed seismic reflection study of the area off Norway's margin where it is estimated 3500 cubic kilometers of material slid down the continental slope.

Ewing will work her way south after this, ending up in Bermuda and even perhaps New York towards the end of the year.

We submitted a total of 32 proposals to NSF's August 15th target date. Good luck to everyone. I understand the magnitude of the effort associated with preparing these 32 documents. It is the engine that allows this place to run.

Tim Harwood and I hosted Barbara Noseworthy, the newly arrived Development Officer for the Earth Institute, this afternoon. Several folks had the opportunity to meet with her and I hope that she will be a regular visitor to our campus over the next several years as we work together closely to raise the capital needed for our ambitious plans for campus development.

I suppose this is the last week of summer - enjoy.

– Mike
