<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

This has been a rushed week of meetings, made uncomfortable by a broken small toe on my left foot. The true circumstances under which this unfortunate and incomprehensibly painful event occurred will remain forever shrouded in secrecy.

Nevertheless with the assistance of oversized shoes I survived a week of almost constant meetings, among them Executive Committee meetings of both the Earth institute and Lamont; three separate meetings working on the replacement research vessel proposal; a brief meeting with the new head of the National Ocean Survey at NOAA, Rick Spinrad; another meeting to plan one of the symposia within the CU's 250th celebration; three separate hour long conference calls on various JOI and CORE issues; a DEES planning committee meeting; an excellent hour with the graduate students along with Bill Menke and Mia Leo, and a wonderful half hour chatting with the first colloquium speaker of the year, Peter Molnar.

Other than that it was quite a productive week!

Next week is shortened by the need to attend two days of UNOLS meetings in DC on Thursday and Friday.

It is great to see the new group of graduate students here as the new academic year begins, and I trust the weather forecast for this weekend proves to be completely inaccurate.

Have a good weekend anyway,

– Mike
