<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It has been a hectic week. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my trip to Florida for the CORE Board of Governors meeting because of just too many pressing issues here. I had a substantial meeting with President Bollinger, Robert Kasdin and Jeff Sachs on Monday discussing our plans for an NSF proposal to fund the replacement of Maurice Ewing with a much more capable vessel.

On Thursday, we hosted both the Arctic and Antarctic Research Section heads of the NSF Office of Polar Programs along with seven of their program managers, for a day long site visit. Thanks and appreciation must go to everyone who participated in this, but especially to Steve Goldstein and Stan Jacobs who did such an exceptional job of organization. Our NSF colleagues were unquestionably impressed by the strength and diversity of our polar research activities. As was President Grimsson of Iceland who spent almost three hours here also on Thursday. He is a tremendously impressive individual extremely well informed and completely engaged in trying to understand the importance of climate change to his nations future. We presented him with an autographed (by our good friend Marie) and framed copy of the classic Heezen Tharp world ocean map. He and his Secret Service motorcade left us only minutes after David Hirsh (the new CU Executive Vice President for Research) and Ira Katznelson (Acting Vice President for Arts and Sciences), completed their introductory meeting with the DEES faculty. So, yes Thursday was a busy day.

Today Friday, we hosted Admiral Lautenbacher the head of NOAA and a number of his staff, and at the ceremonial unveiling of the plaque in the foyer of IRI (that acknowledges the contributions of NOAA to the IRI), we heard the great news that Steve Zebiak has been appointed to the permanent position of Director General of the IRI - Congratulations Steve!!

We lost one of beautiful old oak trees to the gale force winds - one of the ones north of Monell. Nature at work, but still it is sad.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
