<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Important transitions sometimes come without much notice.

I must report to you that our Director of Administration, Jeff Shapiro, has informed me that he will be leaving the Observatory as of the New Year. We have been working closely with the senior managers in the administration to make sure that this transition will be a smooth one; everyone is committed to the goal of continuing to provide the best services possible. George Papa has been appointed Acting Administrator while the decision-making regarding the future is completed. I very much appreciate the fact that Jeff has agreed to remain available to all of us as needed, and take this opportunity to thank him for all he has done for the Observatory.

We wish Jeff well in his future endeavors.

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year celebration. 2004 holds many challenges for us, and I would look forward to facing these next week, were it not for the fact that I have to fly off to a major NSF workshop on Ocean Observations on Saturday. The fact that it is being held in San Juan, Puerto Rico will of course cause everyone to think it is a boondoggle, instead of the reality of four days spent in windowless basement meeting rooms in an overpriced completely conventional American chain hotel. I should be back in the office on Friday.

And while we are on the subject of traveling - a disheartening, but perhaps useful note on airline checked baggage security: While traveling home from the AGU meeting on a red-eye flight, a laptop computer was stolen from checked baggage of a Lamont staff member. The airline then cited its baggage policy, which excludes responsibility for high-value items such as laptop computers in checked baggage, thus no relief from them, or, likely from the Transportation Security Administration, which apparently inspected the bag. We are left with our own insurance claim, and the unhappy feeling that checked baggage is not entirely secure.

Have great weekend, and look after your laptops!

– Mike
