<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

We are very pleased to announce the initiation of the search for the first appointee to a new position within the Observatory to be called the Bruce C. Heezen Senior Research Scientist. The advertisement that will appear in Science, Nature and Eos in the coming weeks can be viewed at http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/ldeo/empl/post/heezen_ad.html

I thank Bill Ryan and Paul Richards for agreeing to co-chair the search committee. The position is supported by new endowment resources received from the estate of Bruce's mother Esther Dauch.

I spent Wednesday evening and Thursday in DC serving on an NSF Special Purpose Review Panel for the Earthscope Project Execution Plan. Despite my time at NSF, this was a new experience. It was not an anonymous panel (obviously, because otherwise I would not be telling you about it!), and after submission of our written reviews we spent most of the day face-to-face with the PIs themselves, listening to their rebuttal of our reviews quite a different process from the standard NSF procedure. The focus was on implementation and management issues rather than the science (it is a $219M project) so it was not as much fun as it could have been.

(Hint: if you want to impress re. your management skills talk about EVM it is the latest fashion, and in fact is gong to be required by NSF for the management of large projects. EVM means 'earned value management')

There is no higher priority in my office right now than resolving the issue of leadership for our administrative services. I am continuing to meet with the Associate Directors and with the administrative managers to get input and ideas on how best to move forward - not specifically with regard to the identity of individuals to serve as Administrator (as previously defined), but rather on the structure - the management structure - that would be most appropriate, that would best enable us to move forward. This will be an important topic of discussion at the next meeting of ExCom. I have committed to making a decision about the nature of any new structure that we may devise by early February. Any required search or searches for new individuals will commence immediately after that.

Have a great weekend, and keep warm,

– Mike
