<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
The highlight of this week was unquestionably a day spent
in Norfolk VA (of all places), visiting EWING before she sails
today to begin her operations for the year. Apart from the
joy of getting out of the office and spending a gorgeous sunny
day surrounded by ships and the sea, it was great to see the
ship alive again carrying out all the preparations, drills
and training preparatory to another year of hard work. The
day was not without its comical moments - I found myself in
a small meeting in one of the interior labs, as the Coast
Guard was observing a fire fighting exercise (for the vessel's
officers and crew) - which required all the power to be shut
down and smoke bombs to be deployed. The young Coast Guard
Inspector, checking out the labs with his flashlight was taken
aback to find me, amid all the (simulated) mayhem, complete
with jacket and tie, earnestly discussing logistics and scheduling
issues with a small group in total darkness.
I will have yet another trip to NSF next week, and I hope
we will make major progress with determining the details of
the outcome to our proposal to replace EWING.
Rumor is that it will be warm this weekend - have a good
one,
– Mike
