<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

A combination of a Senior Staff meeting and George Philander's engaging colloquium has left little time this afternoon to write up the week's activities. Two 'goodbye' parties, one on Monday for Millie Giartanno (who came to work at LDEO for the first time in 1958) and one on Tuesday for Dee Breger (who has worked here for more than 39 years) reminded us all of the dedicated service that has made Lamont the great place it is. We all wish Millie and Dee good fortune - retirement for Millie and an excellent position at Drexler University in Philadelphia for Dee.

An important date next week is 1 PM on Tuesday in Lamont Hall - there will be one hour long open meeting with David Hirsh, Columbia's newly appointed Executive Vice President for Research.

Speaking of important dates - my son, Christopher, is getting married next week - a traditional southern wedding down in Charleston, South Carolina, so I will not be around on Thursday and Friday. I will be pretending to be a responsible father, making frivolous and amusing speeches and exercising great self-control by not making comments about the food. Naturally he is way too young to be getting married, but then I think they always are (ones own children I mean.)
