<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It turns out that weddings Charleston, South Carolina-style are three days of continuous parties and events, so when I got home Sunday night, having successfully married off my only son to a wonderful Southern Belle, I felt like a needed a week's rest to recover ... not to mention the fact that, after three days of clear blue skies and 75 degree air, a return to the cold was most unwelcome.

We are overwhelmed with good news this week.

Please congratulate Del Bohnenstiehl for being selected as the Storke-Doherty Lecturer, an appointment that will begin this July 1st. Del is particularly deserving of recognition because of the particularly high quality of the other contenders this year, all of whom deserve recognition for the quality and significance of their research.

And ALL the folks in the Tree Ring lab deserve praise for a major funding coup. They have just been informed by NSF that a $5.5M grant will be recommended for funding over five years. This is an experiment on NSF's part to focus a large block of funding on one outstanding group of researchers to provide the opportunity for focused effort outside of the usual distracting treadmill of continuous fund raising and multiple projects. The fact that the folks in TRL were the one selected to initiate this experiment is a testament to the standing and reputation that they have earned within their community. Congratulations. This is an extremely important achievement, not only for TRL, but for the Observatory as a whole.

The State of the Planet Conference is next week - March 29th and 30th - please do not forget that it is necessary to register if you wish to attend this - it is simple - you can do it on-line - but even CU folks need to register to be admitted.

Free LDEO to Morningside (and return) buses are being arranged for both the "State of Planet" conference (March 29-30th) and "Taming the Climate" (April 22-23). Watch for news postings with details.

Have great week,

– Mike
