<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Following last week’s round of good news about promotions
we continue this week with the announcement that the recipient
of the PGI – Doherty Junior Scientist Award is Michael
Studinger in the MG&G Division. Congratulations Michael!
Another landmark that has recently been achieved is the discovery,
after several weeks of deliberate searching, of the rear wall
of the warehouse – something that has not been seen
for many years. Not only can you see from the front to the
back of the warehouse, but a forklift can now be driven to
the back of the warehouse, reports Paul Ljunggren who along
with several colleagues has been leading this heroic effort
to win back some useful storage space for the Observatory.
But there is still long way to go with identifying, tagging,
and disposing of equipment and material that has not seen
the light of day for many years. As progress is made with
the reorganization and management of the warehouse Paul and
Tom and Dale and Bruce and their colleagues will continue
to need the support and cooperation of the Lamont community.
Next week, the Lamont Campus Computing Oversight Committee
will release the 2004 Computer User Survey. If you recall,
the committee conducted a similar survey in 2001. This year,
the intended audience is broader, encompassing all personnel
on campus, from the Observatory's Directorate and Science
Divisions, Central Administration, CIESIN and the IRI. The
intent is to understand your computing habits and requirements
better, and to elicit your opinions and concerns about the
way we do computing here on campus. Your feedback is extremely
important for sensible strategic planning for improvements
and upgrades to computing services here on campus. The survey
will be available on-line, and it should take you only 20
minutes or so to complete. Please take the time to complete
the survey, your participation is very important
I spent a long and sticky day down at NSF this past Wednesday
talking with many of the usual suspects in the Ocean Sciences
Division – Mike Reeve, Dolly Dieter, Larry Clark, Sandy
Shor, Dave Epp, Don Rice about a myriad of issues. I am back
to DC over the weekend to participate in a State Department
workshop – I am scheduled to return home Tuesday night.
Monday of next week will be an historic day – the JOIDES
Resolution will sail from Astoria Oregon on the inaugural
expedition of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. IODP
was born at a meeting that I attended in Leiden, The Netherlands
on April 29th 1997. Seven years later commitments exist to
allow its growth to an international science program of unusual
magnitude and breadth, substantially exceeding $100M per year
in operational costs. It remains the best example of why we
should never lack ambition (and patience) in planning our
science programs!
– Mike
