<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I have heard Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture played with live cannons before, but the cannons have always been rather puny ceremonial things that produced clean white smoke - no smell of cordite, no shock wave from the air blast - really quite dissatisfying. However, last weekend to celebrate the independence of this great nation, I was invited up to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where their better-than-average firework display over the Hudson is accompanied by a substantial military band. And they played the 1812 accompanied by a battery of howitzers. This was very satisfactory. My hearing is back to normal now.

Rarely can I find time in my schedule to attend the Ph.D. defense presentations of our graduating students - not a good thing. But this week miraculously I was able to attend two - Alicia Karspeck on Wednesday and John Granville earlier this afternoon. Congratulations to both on clearly superb research efforts.

It was sad to wish Martin Visbeck good-bye on Thursday at his well-attended party. He moves to a most prestigious position at the University of Kiel, and he leaves with all our best wishes, and a promise to end the jokes about the long winter nights and the ten-tenths cloud-cover of Northern Germany. At least until the next time he visits, which we hope will be soon.

We have received a number of nominations for the name of our new research vessel - Jackie Graney in the Marine Office is assembling these. Nominations will remain open for one more week so let Jackie know if you have an opinion on this matter.

Enjoy a wonderful summer weekend,

– Mike
