<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I flew out to San Francisco on Monday night and have spent the week in windowless meeting rooms serving on the Marine Mammal Commission’s advisory committee on anthropogenic sound in the ocean and its potential impact on marine mammals. Tonight (Friday) I fly down to San Diego and tomorrow morning I will visit our research vessel MAURICE EWING that is in port at the Scripps pier. I fly home after meeting with Scripps Director Charlie Kennel on Monday morning.

I think most folks are aware that we have made great progress with building an effective development program at the Observatory over the past couple of years. It is a slow and difficult business – money does not fall from the sky. Private fund raising only succeeds with the relentless search for new prospective donors and after years of careful stewardship. So it is with special regret that I announce that Tim Harwood, who has been responsible for building our new development effort here, will be leaving the Observatory at the end of October. With the new Administration down town there have been many changes inside Columbia’s development operation and Tim has decided that his best career opportunities lie elsewhere. He will work closely with his staff here at Lamont and with colleagues at UDAR to insure that the transition is as smooth as possible.
