8th (no meetings in August). Also submitted application
for Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) Meeting tentatively scheduled
for end of September (again, no meetings in August).
- Marine Biology, Room 13:
Casework installation complete. Job complete.
- Left Hand Turn Lane / Front Entrance:
Contractor scheduled to blacktop (base coat only) new front
entrance Monday, August 9th. They will then remove the existing
entrance.
- Geoscience Walk-In Freezer:
Freezer components delivered and arrangements for rental
freezer underway.

Plumbing and electrical complete. Lab is operational and
3 fume hoods connected to old exhaust blowers until the
replacement blowers arrive.

<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
’You don't eat anything that I
can cook’ was my daughter’s typically astute response
to my question about why, during my visit with her last weekend
in San Diego, we ate all our meals in local restaurants. I
have yet to come up with a clever response to that troublesome
reality, but extortionate La Jolla restaurant bills aside,
I had a great day and a half of escape on Saturday and Sunday
between visiting EWING at the Scripps Marine Facility and
meeting with Scripps Director Charlie Kennel on Monday morning.
I have many items of good news to report
this week. We have two new members of the Senior Staff at
the Observatory – Xiaojun Yuan and Alexey Kaplan –
both in Ocean and Climate Physics. Please congratulate them
when next you see them – this is a tough hurdle to overcome
and they both richly deserve this promotion and the recognition
that comes with it.
We have also added a new Doherty Associate
Research Scientist to the Marine Geology and Geophysics Division
– Mladen Nedimovic – whose innovative work on
processing marine seismics is well known to many.
Substantial progress is being made in
the renovation of a part of the campus that is known to comparatively
few: - the Instrument Laboratory. With the expansions needed
to accommodate the new IODP contract for the Borehole Research
Group (BRG), new instrumentation and new facilities have been
installed and the new spaces are close to completion. Much
remains to be done to accommodate the needs of BRG, but this
is a good beginning.
A few stalwarts continue to fight the
battle with the warehouse rescue project. I have previously
reported that the back wall of the warehouse was recently
spotted for the first time in decades – now sufficient
progress has been made so that it is possible to drive a forklift
through the warehouse, around the back and out to the parking
lot along the south side. All three segments of this path
have been blocked with ‘stuff’ for years. The
down side is that in spite of disposing (properly) of about
10 dumpsters full of ‘stuff', there is still no space,
so we need to continue working on this. The principal heroes
in this are Dale Chayes and Paul Ljunggren and of course Tom
Eberhard, with help from many others. Thank you, gentlemen.
Important news from Morningside is the
appointment of the new Vice President for Art and Sciences
(to whom the Chair of DEES reports) – he is Nick Dirks,
who has been at CU since 1997, and most recently was Chair
of the Department of Anthropology. I will work with Nick Christie-Blick
to schedule a visit for Professor Dirks to our campus as soon
as possible in the fall.
That's it for this week. The summer is
somehow slipping by. I am in DC again Tuesday and Wednesday
of next week for a CORE retreat (Consortium for Oceanographic
research and Education), but otherwise I am around.
Have a great weekend,
– Mike
