<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Because a trip to Kansas City was cancelled at the last minute, I did not actually travel this week. A welcome respite! Nevertheless it has been an active few days, grappling with issues as diverse as solving internal budget shortfalls to talking with Senate staffers about NSF funding for the Ocean Drilling program. One additional notable event was a meeting with our group of recent hew hires to the staff and faculty - something I have been trying to schedule for many many weeks (Jim Gaherty, Andy Juhl, Peter Kelemen, Wade McGillis, Ajit Subramaniam, Andreas Thurnherr, Chris Zappa) - this was unquestionably the most enjoyable session of the week so far. The only possibility that this may be eclipsed is this evening's Explorer's Club event downtown at which Gary Comer will receive one of the Lowell Thomas Awards.

We received an important visit today from Deborah Stiles, who works with David Hirsh and is the newly appointed Vice President for Research Operations. She spent most of the day here, meeting with several different groups of folks, learning about our problems and difficulties with things-administrative downtown - she promises to be a great and helpful ally.

Next week it is back to DC again - for my first formal meeting with the new NSF Director designate Arden Bement, as well as auxiliary discussions with Margaret Leinen and her trusty colleagues in Geosciences..
