<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It is with the greatest pleasure that I announce the long overdue election of Bob Anderson as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union. Congratulations Bob - this tangible expression of respect and recognition by your colleagues at the national (and international) level is well deserved.

We made significant positive progress this week with our plans for the new Geochemistry Building - there are many challenges and hurdles yet to overcome, but it is clear that the University wants to help us make this ambitious plan a reality. I hope that within the next couple of months we will be able to start making some public announcements about our ideas and plans.

We entertained the President of Western Geco for an afternoon, along with two of his senior leadership, and talked of our plans to modify their ship (which is now ours) for academic research, and our common interests in developing 3D and 4D seismic techniques - very productive discussions and perhaps the start of more substantive cooperative activities.

More interviews also this week (for the Development Director position), and lots of planning for the inaugural meeting of our new fledgling advisory board next Wednesday afternoon.

And now we should all look forward to a very snowy weekend,

– Mike

"Aliens of the Deep" an IMAX 3-D film directed by James Cameron will premiere January 25th at Loews Lincoln Square Theater in Manhattan. Our own Maya Tolstoy, is one of the scientist-stars of "Aliens of the Deep" and will be at the premier.

We are making plans for Lamont staff and friends to view the film either in New York (Feb 1 at 7:00 pm, space permitting) or West Nyack (date and time to be determined). Please contact Sara Kopcsak in the Development office about tickets (x8634, kopcsak@ldeo).
