<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Because Monday and Tuesday were spent in Washington, this has been a short (but busy) week.

We received the final Audit report from the CU Audit Department - we will present that to ExCom later in the month, but suffice it to say that in my judgment, we came out extremely well. As always there are areas of our operations that can be improved, but the recommendations are for incremental improvements - no systemic flaws were found. This is a tribute to the many folks in our administration who keep us honest and insure that our business is carried out as it should be. Thank you to all.

The release of the Presidents budget request for 2006 brings some sobering realities - tiny increases requested for NSF, and the Ocean Observations MREFC initiative is delayed to 2007. The new vessel for the Ocean Drilling Program, however is fully funded (in the request, at least!) over 06 and 07 which is very good news. But the priorities of Federal spending remain misguided. Relatively tiny investments in high quality basic research time and time again have yielded vast returns to the benefit of the national economy. Yet when the economy is pressured it is the academic research community that is one of the first to feel the pain. But I am preaching to the choir and we are far far away from knowing what the 06 budget will actually look like……..

As part of our continuing efforts to improve communications with the leadership of Morningside we entertained Associate Provost Roxy Smith on Thursday afternoon - Roxy works closely with Provost Alan Brinkley and will, we hope, visit us again in the next few weeks so we can continue to explain the many different activities ongoing here at Lamont.

With (the NSF target date) February 15th a few days away, I doubt this weekend will be much fun for most, but have a good one anyway,

– Mike
