<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am attending to family duties by attending a wedding at a gorgeous secluded lodge 60 miles south of San Francisco. If it were not pouring with rain the views over the mountains and out to the Pacific Ocean would be wonderful.

Anyway, it has been an important week for reasons more global that family nuptials. Most importantly, we took another major and successful step forward in our quest to build a new lab building for our Geochemistry Division. We have received formal approval to move forward with our planning and fundraising efforts from President Bollinger - it is clear that we have strong support at all levels of the University's leadership to make this longstanding dream a reality….. exciting times.

As I am sure many have noticed, I rarely report on our ship operations in this weekly message - that is simply because of the recent exaggerated public attention that has been directed at us for one reason and another. But it is important to remember that EWING is just a few days away from finishing her very last research cruise - after which, following a brief port stop in Florida, she will transit north to Narragansett Bay Rhode Island, to lie alongside the R/V Marcus G. Langseth. It will be a bittersweet moment, when EWING is decommissioned - she has contributed so greatly to humankind's knowledge of earth sciences.

I am flying back east on Sunday, after it stops raining, I hope.
