<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

After steaming more than half a million miles in the cause of ocean sciences, our ship the Maurice Ewing will enter port in Jacksonville Florida early tomorrow morning ending her last cruise as an operational member of the UNOLS research vessel fleet. I will be leaving immediately after the Senior Staff meeting this afternoon at 3:30pm in a glorious attempt to catch a 5:30 flight out of JFK so I can be on the dock when she arrives tomorrow - we will see whether I make it!

She will leave Florida on Sunday and steam up to Narragansett Bay, where the demobilization process will begin. Her recent trials triggered a well-written article in today's Spectator.

I am sure we will all be pleased when the weather warms sufficiently that the New Jersey State construction around our main entrance can be completed - with that will come handsome new signage as well as an electronically controlled gate, the details of the operation of which Ray Long will share with you in the near future.

Have a good weekend - I am back in the office on Monday but then have three days in DC……….

– Mike
