<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I spent two days at a Marine Mammal Commission advisory committee meeting in DC this week, as well as a reception on the Hill, organized by CORE. Despite the bleak short-term outlook with the 06 budget requests the community continues its efforts to use the reports from the two recent Ocean Commissions to build increased support for matters oceanographic among our legislators - a few Washington luminaries were there including John McCain, Leon Panetta, Jim Watkins. There was also a meeting of the Board of Governors of CORE, which bringing as it does, the Directors and Deans of every major academic ocean activity in the nation together in one room, is inevitably an interesting experience.

Earlier this week I received the final navigation report from EWING as she came alongside in Narragansett Bay Rhode Island and began her demobilization operations - it was a very nostalgic moment - the end of an era. I went down to Jacksonville Florida last Friday night and met the ship as she made her first US port call after her long and difficult cruise in Mexican waters. It was a source of pride to listen to the accounts first hand from the Captain and crew of what they had been through these past weeks, and realize the extent to which their professionalism and skill had prevented some very difficult situations from becoming international incidents. We are planning some ways to recognize EWING's many substantial contributions to earth sciences - news on this in coming weeks.

It was more than 20 years ago that I promised my brother's eldest daughter, who was ten years old at the time, that I would attend her wedding. She is holding me to that promise next week - which is why tomorrow I fly to Auckland New Zealand. I will be more careful with my promises in the future, not that this will not be an excellent family event - it will assuredly be so - but more hours breathing low-oxygen airline atmospheres is not what I want…… So I will be away all next week - back in the office the middle of the following week, most likely burned to a crisp by the sun of the tropical summer at the northernmost tip of North Island.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
