<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It was tough to return from the New Zealand summer and leave behind the blue ocean, the deserted sandy bays, the fabulous geology and the irresistible meat pies.

But I returned to an interesting week of activity.

Yesterday there was an excellent event downtown formally marking the start of the ADVANCE program at the Earth Institute. Princeton President Shirley Tilghman, Lee Bollinger and our own Robin Bell all gave excellent presentations - followed by a reception at the Presidents House that was exceptionally productive in terms of opportunities for meaningful side-conversations with colleagues from down town.

We also met (to say good-bye) with Dan Nienhauser, the chief administrator for the earth Institute who is leaving Columbia for the sun and warmth of Arizona to work with the redoubtable Michael Crow at the University of Arizona.

I have received the final recommendations from the Post Doc fellowship committee and am working on the final decisions on who will receive offers, from this year’s excellent crop of more than 150 applicants. I plan to get this finalized next week.

My week ended with a marathon 3 hour ExCom this morning and a much more reasonable one hour Council of Deans meeting this afternoon, which sadly was scheduled on top of Tim Eglinton's colloquium.

Another important thing this week:
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Huard as Director of Development for Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory effective April 29th, 2005. Sarah succeeds Tim Harwood, who over the last few years built our first comprehensive alumni relations and development program.

Sarah has an excellent background in development, with varied experience at the Marymount School (New York), Stanford University, and most recently at PRBO Conservation Science near San Francisco.

Sarah will work closely with our Advisory Board and Alumni Association, existing staff members Doug Brusa and Sara Kopcsak, and will be an integral part of the development staff at the Earth Institute and University Development and Alumni Relations.
I hope that you will join me in welcoming Sarah to the Observatory when she arrives in a few weeks.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
