<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

A large part of both Thursday and Friday were spent interviewing architect firms who had submitted proposals to design our new Geochemistry Building. This was an excellent process completed earlier today in cooperation with colleagues from CU Facilities. Our recommendations will go forward to University leadership downtown and I hope that a final selection will be made in a small number of weeks. We were privileged to meet with some of the best laboratory designers and engineers in the nation - a very educational couple of days.

Next Tuesday I will spend in Chicago with LDEO Development Director Sarah Huard, talking to foundations about our need for increased non-Federal resources - thank you to all who have helped me with graphics and substance to use in these talks. Although it is substantial work putting these Observatory-wide presentations together, it is also very satisfying to appreciate, yet again, the breadth, quality and significance of the research that is carried out here.

I know folks have expressed concern about visibility from the newly designed 9W front entrance (still under construction by our hard-working colleagues from the State of New Jersey) - rest assured that this is not the final configuration - when it is completed we will make sure that the goal of substantially increasing safety for cars entering from, and exiting to, 9W is significantly improved.

Please take note of the memorandum below, sent out to the leadership of the Campus last week - a necessary decision to solve a pesky problem I fear.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike

MEMORANDUM

Re: Use of Lamont Shipping Dept. for Personal Transactions
From: G. M. Purdy
To: LDEO community

It has been a long standing tradition that the Lamont Shipping Department would accept and process personal items for shipping. Unfortunately there has been a consistent record of difficulty in receiving appropriate reimbursement for these treansactions that is the cause of wasted time and effort on the part of the campus' administrative staff.

Therefore, effective immidiately I have instructed the Shipping Department not to accept personal items for shipping.
