<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

This great institution is built on the shoulders of legends who have advanced their respective fields of study in fundamental ways. We lost one of those legends this week - Gerard Bond died on Wednesday. He was one of the great geologists and climate scientists of our era, whose determined and rigorous approach to his work resulted in a career-long record of major contributions to our understanding of the earth. Our hearts go out to his family and especially to Rusti, who herself plays an essential role in the success of Lamont. We will be planning appropriate ways to celebrate Gerard's life and recognize his accomplishments.

It has been an extremely busy week: five to seven scheduled meetings every day. Ron Schmidt, our head of Purchasing had a retirement Party on Wednesday night, and amid the torrential rain regaled us with his joy at escaping to warm and dry Arizona. Thanks for everything Ron - and good luck.

The happiest part of the week was telling Bruno Tremblay and Beate Liepert, that they had successfully achieved promotion to the Senior Staff - this is a great accomplishment - please congratulate them when next you see them. Both Bruno and Beate are young legends in the making.

And while you are in a congratulatory mood, please give good wishes to Hue-Ping Huang in the OCP Division - he was appointed a Doherty Associate Research Scientist effective today.

Having started this 'legends' theme to this weeks report, forces me to remind everyone about two great Lamont scientists both of whom have quietly slipped into retirement status this year. Jim Hays, whose work on paleoclimate changed the way we think of earth history, retired in December, but he continues active in research here, a situation I hope will continue for many years to come. And, believe it or not, yesterday was Lynn Sykes last day as a full faculty member after about 45 years at Columbia. It is difficult to think about our understanding of earthquakes and plate tectonics and the detection of nuclear explosions without thinking of Lynn's work. What would our world be like without the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty? I am sure Lynn will continue to contribute to Lamont in important ways for the foreseeable future.

It is a privilege to work surrounded by such great scientists. And it is so sad, so profoundly sad, that with Gerard's passing, there will be one less to learn from, to respect and admire.

A happy Fourth of July to everyone,

– Mike
