Highlights this week were Jeff Sachs leading the Open Meeting on the new Geochemistry building before a capacity audience in the Monell Auditorium on Tuesday; some interesting briefings for two of Congressman Engel's staffers on Wednesday; and one of the shortest ExCom's in recent history on Friday!

But also of great significance this week has been the attention that some of our solid earth research has received - Connie Class and Steve Goldstein's very visible 'whole mantle convection' paper in Nature (see LDEO web site also) and Paul Richards' rotation of the core' paper in Science that was picked up both by this morning's New York Times and CNN.com (http://www.cnn.com/2005/TECH/science/08/25/ earth.spin.ap/index.html) This was all excellent coverage for the Observatory - congratulations to all - and thanks to our folks in External relations for making it all happen.

I am escaping next week - going to Maine - so if you can avoid sending me email I would appreciate it!

DEES Orientation party for 37 incoming graduate students: Wednesday 8/31 at 5 pm behind Lamont Hall. Food, drinks, everyone welcome!

Registration: Thurs 9/1 & Friday 9/2, 9am-5pm in the DEES office: 106 Geoscience.

Classes begin: Tuesday Sept 6.
