<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

This first (short) week of the new academic year has been dominated by an excellent 2.5 day-long Symposium held in Monell talking about the exciting potential of the three-dimensional imaging capabilities that our new research vessel will bring to the national and international geophysical community. Co-convenors John Mutter and Greg Moore (Univ. of Hawaii) did a great job bringing together a superb group of industry practitioners from the major oil and contracting companies, along with all the leading academics in the US, supplemented by colleagues from Japan and Europe. The potential of 3D and 4D techniques is overwhelming - I think the community is only just beginning to think about the breadth of applications and opportunities that this important new tool will provide. It was great to become immersed in science for a few days - it reminded me of why I got into this business.

Planning for the Geochem Building proceeds apace. We will be appearing before the Orangetown Planning Board next Wednesday evening - just for a 5 minute informal report but it will be first public
announcement of our plans to the local community. That presentation will be sandwiched between a trip to Houston on Tuesday and a day trip to Denver on Thursday, so next week will not be so enjoyable.

It is September 11th on Sunday - a sad day for us all to remember as we also think of the profound tragedy of New Orleans.  We have offered haven to colleagues from Tulane University, and
continue to search for meaningful ways in which we can continue to help.

Have a very safe weekend,

- Mike
