<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
I was remiss last week in not reporting to you that the EWING
sailed from Quonsett Point, Rhode Island on Friday, 30th September
at about 1300. The ship has Norwegian owners, will be registered
in Norway, and the new name is SCAN Resolution - a proud ship
that many of us will remember fondly for many years to come.
We had a very successful dinner for our FOLD (Friends of Lamont
Doherty) members on Friday night - Klaus Jacob kept everyone
intrigued and entertained with a magnificent presentation
on tsunamis and hurricanes - topics that resonate very effectively
with constituents in the general public for some reason.
Open House on Saturday was another resounding success - although
the total number of attendees was less than last year (because
of conflicting local events), the tents were all crowded and
I heard nothing but unqualified praise for all our activities.
Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen - it
was, yet again, a magnificent tribute to the quality of the
work we do here. It was a
very busy day - in addition to a well-attended meeting of
the LDEO Alumni Association Board there were several good
meetings with potential donors.
I was in DC the first three days of this week at Board meetings
of JOI and CORE. Progress towards the merger of these two
organizations continues positively. Although the funding for
ocean sciences from our traditional sponsors continues to
be a significant cause for concern, there is much activity
among the federal agencies, responding to recommendations
in the Ocean Commission report by creating a new White House
level coordinating group (led by CEQ). Basic research priorities
are, however, buried among a substantial list of policy-oriented
priorities that this group has to tackle. But
at least there is a White House-mandated cabinet level group
charged to worry about the oceans. Maybe something good will
come out of it. Ocean observing remains the most visible activity
that gets
the attention of the policy makers and has potential impact
on us.
Forgetting (again) that Columbia University does not recognize
Columbus Day (this coming Monday) as a holiday, I had some
time ago arranged a long weekend starting tonight - which
explains the sudden deterioration in the weather.
Have a good weekend anyway - I will be back in town on Monday
night.
- Mike
