<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The week's highlight was Jeff Sachs' Global Change Round Table downtown in Lerner Hall on Monday and Tuesday that brought industry and government leaders from around the globe together to debate the challenges of the increasing carbon dioxide in the earth's atmosphere. There were many impressive presentations that reinforced the reality that there ARE good ideas for sensible things that could be done today to improve our future, - the missing piece is national leaders that are willing listen and act.

Thanks to Ellen Smith and Nick Moustakis who came out here this afternoon to give a brief on the tough budget situation in Washington - if you would like a copy of the presentation, please contact Nick at nm14@columbia.edu.

Given the choice of writing more for this report versus going down the corridor to listen to Andy Revkin, the NYT science writer, I make the decision to keep this short this week.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike

AGU Poster Printing - New FAQ available

AGU is just around the corner. Last year we got through poster printing by the skin of our teeth. The queue was 6 to 8 hours long on the Friday before AGU, and the plotter web page was unusable.
Please, please try to get your plot out before the last minute rush! If you wait until the last minute, you run the real risk of a delayed flight or no plot.

The 60" HP plotter is available as before with a web cam to view plotting progress (see FAQ). Note that the HP60 has moved to Seismology 206. The older 54" plotter is back in service, but only
for Windows PCs with 512 MB or more memory and a fast CPU. The 54" plotter can not be used from Macs or UNIX. The 54" plotter is located in Seismology 114. It also has a web cam. Contact
robk@admin.ldeo.columbia.edu for installation of the driver software.

There is a new plotter FAQ on the IT website. Please read it, especially if you are making a poster for the first time. And please start your poster early!
