<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
There is little to be said this week. The excitement of returning
to the challenges of the New Year was devastated by the tragic
news of Bill Haxby's sudden and terribly untimely death.
I think I first met Bill in 1982 or 1983 in Woods Hole when
he visited the Oceanographic Institution to give a talk about
his new maps of the ocean floor (derived from satellite altimetry).
Everyone was stunned at what they revealed - it was a very
exciting time. We desperately tried to hire Bill away from
Lamont at that time - but he was not interested at all. In
his own quiet and inspired way he has had a huge impact on
marine geophysics. He will be sorely missed for so many many
reasons.
A formal obituary will be posted on our website this afternoon,
as one small step towards giving his memory the respect it
deserves. And
for those who missed my earlier announcement, the funeral
arrangements are as follows:
2:00 pm, Saturday, January 7th
Grace Episcopal Church
9 Harrington Ave. (at the 5 corners), Westwood, NJ
There will be a reception in the church following the service.
Flowers or contributions can be sent to Grace Episcopal Church
of Westwood, NJ
In addition, in an effort to collect more memories of this
wonderful man and building a lasting record, we are establishing
a section on
our web page where folks can post their recollections of,
and stories about, Bill. If you would like to contribute to
this simply send an email message to billhaxby@ldeo.columbia.edu
and your text will be posted on the web page.
Nothing else to say today.
- Mike
