<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The news last week of Sir Nicholas Shackleton's passing was a sad blow - he has been a great friend to Lamont over the years. The last
time I saw him was at our Vetlesen Medal ceremony last year. All of climate science will miss him. If you google his name you will find
many great testaments to his life's accomplishments. We will get something up on our own web page next week.

The President's statements about increased funding for science in the State of the Union address (hope you saw the Groundhog Day joke that
has been going around on email) suggest that there may be some good news in the 2007 budget for NSF when it is released next week
(perhaps a 9 per cent increase?) - but there is a long way to go from the Administration Request to the final budget approved by Congress.

Chuck Vest's impressive speech in the Rotunda of the Low Library last Tuesday afternoon was followed by a grand and enjoyable dinner
at Lee Bollinger's house. The focus of the activity were issues of gender equity in university faculties - Alice Hogan the ADVANCE
program manger at NSF attended and thanks to Robin Bell we were able to entertain her here at Lamont on Wednesday.

And now I must rush to hear my old colleague Henry Dick talk at this afternoon's colloquium. I doubt he will have changed.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
