<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Just a very brief report this week. The annual Earth Institute
retreat has consumed all of today - trapped in the dark rooms
of the
CU Faculty Club, missing the last few rays of sun before the
snowstorm arrives tomorrow.
The high point of the week was the release of the 2007 Federal
budget request. NSF Ocean Sciences has a 6.5 per cent increase;
NSF
Earth Sciences over 8 per cent; more than $300M over five
years for
the ocean Observatories Initiative, as well as full funding
for the
drill ship and a new Arctic Research vessel. So, all in all,
very
good news. The NOAA budget remains opaque - I cannot reliably
determine what it represents - I will require more expert
interpretative help with this - but the NOAA budget will assuredly
be
gnawed upon substantially by Congress. Our goal on the Hill
in the
coming months will be to do all possible to keep the Administration
request for NSF intact. A few more years of 6-8 percent increases
will help us all get healthy again.
Have a great weekend,
- Mike
