<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Coming home from Salt Lake City on the red-eye last Friday night was
about as much fun as a hole in the head - but at least landing at
Newark at 530am means no delays, and no traffic. My last day out West
was spent at the annual meeting of the members of the international
corporation (of which we are one) that runs the drilling program -
IODP, the current President of which is ex-Lamont Director Manik
Talwani. Interesting times: operations of the massive Japanese riser
drilling ship Chikyu are fast becoming a reality - it will start
doing real science in 2007.

Tuesday morning had me catching the 8am shuttle down to DC for a JOI
Board of Governors meeting, a meeting of the JOI alliance leadership
(LDEO, TAMU and JOI), and an excellent conversation with John
Marburger at OSTP.

I got back from DC late Wednesday night, and survived a three hour
marathon ExCom this morning, and am now looking forward to a week
without travel next week, and wondering about the statistics of
actually being called for Jury Duty (as I have been for April 17th.)

Looking forward to Juerg Matter's Public Lecture this Sunday
afternoon - have a great weekend,

- Mike
