<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

We have an Alumni gathering this Sunday afternoon prior to our last
lecture in our spring series, which will be given by John Mutter who
will talk, in new ways, about the Katrina disaster. Our Alumni group
is getting more active each year and promises to become a real and
effective force in the growth of the Observatory - a very healthy
development.

After some delay we have finalized the post doc fellowship
competition for this year. We have four new stars joining us: Kevin
Achukaitis from the University of Arizona, who will work with Ed Cook
and Rosanne D'Arrigo in the Tree Ring Lab; Rajdeep Dasgupta from the
University of Minnesota to work with Dave Walker; Vala
Hjorleifsdottir from CalTech to work with Goran Ekstrom; and Mark
Siddall from the University of Bern to work with Bob Anderson. A
vote of thanks is due to Gisela Winckler and the other members of the
postdoc selection committee for their excellent work in reviewing
what was, yet again, an outstanding group of applicants.

Please make a note on your calendars for September 12th - it is the
date upon which we hope to bring our new ship Marcus G. Langseth into
Manhattan for a dedication and naming ceremony - details to follow.
