<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Having spent six of the past seven and a half hours in either the
Lamont ExCom or the DEES faculty meeting, my brain is in no fit state
to compose insightful and witty accounts of the weeks happenings. So
I shall be brief.

Especially so since it is a long weekend and I am trying to escape
for a couple of days in a vain attempt to rescue some molecules of
sanity from the turmoil of the past week (etc etc).

Several of us greatly enjoyed entertaining a French Senator on
Monday, who was both interested and well informed on Antarctican
research activities - and was most appreciative of my quip re wishing
our New York (text deleted by White House censors on the grounds of
national security). Anyway, thanks to Robin Bell for leading this
effort - once again we all learned about the importance of LUNCH.

Tuesday and Wednesday were consumed by marathon salary review
meetings with the Associate Directors - we reviewed all the research
staff - a very important process, but very tough - especially in
this constrained world when we have a pool of only 3% from which to
extract merit raises. I doubt that it will be any solace to anyone,
given the small size of the raises that we can give this year, but
they were debated and argued with great thoroughness and vigor!
